Spring Conference
Using Social Media to Fuel Congregational Mission
Facebook. Twitter. Websites. Flikr. Podcasts. YouTube.

About 70 people, representing 35 congregations in MBD and CBD, came out on May 1 to learn how to use this dizzying
array of social media to fuel their congregation's mission.
In the morning, Shelby Meyerhoff, UUA Public Witness Specialist, and Peter Bowden, Ballou Channing District Growth Consultant, helped participants identify and reflect on the potential and
limitations of social media to nurture spiritual depth, faith
development, and community building. They also explored some of the theological
and ethical implications of this media. Their resource materials can be accessed at the following links:
In the afternoon, participants met in affinity groups of lay leaders, DREs and people who work with youth, and ministers, to discuss issues of relevance to each group.
Participation was animated, lively and engaged. Here's what some participants reported about their experience of the event:
- "...it was excellent: good presenters, good discussion, good logistics. I came away with a better sense of the social media options and what each is good for."
- "I know little about social media, and felt I got a good education, as well as the opportunity to address my personal angst with it. I also left feeling reassured, and ready to face the future - a good thing!"
- "Good job!!!! For my first session...it was terrific! Thanks."
- "Very practical. Loved the concept of on-line/off-line connections and creating connections 7 days a week."
- "Shelby's discussion of prioritizing church mission over social media for the sake of social media and her overview of online safety" was most helpful.
